Covilhã / Woolfest

“Wool Tour – Covilhã Urban Art…All year round”

Everything in Covilhã points to a past linked to wool and its manufacture.
Let’s get to know the historic center of the city of Covilhã, where we can also observe various urban art interventions included in the WOOL

– Covilhã Arte Urbana (Awarded with quality seal from the Association of European Festivals).

Another high point is the crossing of the pedestrian bridge of Carpinteira* (the longest and tallest pedestrian bridge in Europe), with views over the industrial nucleus of Ribeira da Carpinteira.

As an OPTIONAL, we can visit a studio, built in an old factory, being a unique and innovative project in the country, which brings together in the same space, a group of artists, whose works are linked to the world of wool, fabrics and its derivatives. All this inserted in a secular factory environment, whose foundations date back to the century. XVI.

* Designed by architect João Carrilho da Graça, the longest and tallest city pedestrian bridge in Europe was chosen as one of the seven most interesting design destinations in the world, according to the January 2011 issue of the “Travel + Leisure” magazine ”.

No place in mainland Portugal has the symbolism and magnificence of Serra da Estrela. The immensity of the granite, the icy snow, the deep valleys dug by the huge masses of ice and its natural lakes with clear and calm waters reflect what Estrela means in all of us: the UNIQUE and the UNMATCHED.

It is an acknowledgment of the opportunity to travel through the rough and atrocious lands, where men and women developed uses, customs and traditions, which today are a hallmark of Estrela.

A visit to the “TORRE”, the highest point in mainland Portugal, where you can taste local products, experience the magnificence of the “Cântaros”, the beauty of the Glacial Valley of Zêzere, the magic of Covão D’Ametade and the incredible sculpture of the Our Lady of Good Star.

Last Minute Programs

“Programs at any time”

  • Program 1 – “Segredos da Estrela”, with a guided tour of Serra da Estrela, including a visit to a Serra da Estrela Dog Breeding Center OR a Burel Factory.
  • Program 2 – “Tesouros da Estrela”, with a guided tour of Serra da Estrela and with “Café do Montanheiro” included, in the middle of the visit.
  • Program 3 – “Joias da Gardunha”, guided visit to Castelo Novo (AH) with “Magusto Serrano” (only in October, November and December) on a PRIVATE farm.
  • Program 4 – “Covilhã Laneira”, visit to the WOOL – Covilhã Arte Urbana, and PEDONAL BRIDGE in Carpinteira (the longest and highest pedestrian city in Europe), with a guided tour of the António Estrela – Júlio Afonso factory-atelier. (optional and subject to confirmation)
